Are you walking in your divine assignment? Lessons I’ve learned about walking in God’s will and the desires of your heart found in Psalm 37:4

I have a question for you today.

What is your divine assignment?

What were you put here for?

Do you even know what it is?

I do. Well, sometimes. LOL I know I was put here to sit and chat with you. Which, to me, is a pretty great assignment because we both know how super cool you are.

A few years ago, probably more than a few by now, my “roomie” as I call her, writer Patricia PacJac Carroll, said something to me that I will never forget. And it all revolves around this scripture:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” ~Psalm 37:4 (ESV)

She said to me, “What if Psalm 37:4 means more than just God giving us what we want? What if it means that He gives us His desires for us and puts them in our hearts?”

And that moment with my friend totally changed the way I would view that scripture and my heart-felt desires forever. What if instead of praying for God to give me what I want, I should be praying for God to give me what He wants for me?

This may be a “Duh, Chelle. Of course that’s what it means.” moment for you. But for me? It was an astounding revelation of God’s Word. I was still pretty new at this whole Christ follower thing back then.

I understood in that moment that I was praying very selfish “give me what I want” prayers instead of asking God’s divine will for my life.

Jesus says in one of my favorite chapters of the Bible, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  (Matthew 6:10 ESV)  It’s those four little words: “your will be done.” that changed my focus on how I pray.

I’m going to be brutally honest here–> Praying for God’s will is hard for me.

Because I’m scared that He will tell me something I don’t want to hear.

I am inherently selfish. I want what I want. I’m a spoiled little brat. Are you? I like to think I’m not the only one. LOL And that at some level, we all want our way. But what if “our way” is not what God planned for us? And what if “our way” is by no means as blessed as God’s original plan would be?

I want everything God has for me. Do you? But it scares my, quite honestly. What if God’s desires for my life are way cooler than I could ever imagine? What if what He has for me is HUGE? With tons of responsibility?

It says in Ephesians 3:20, “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,…” (ESV)

I’ve changed my thinking about God’s plan for my life. Because I want what He wants for me. I want His will that is far more abundantly than all that I can ask or think. I want it ALL! And if He has something HUGE for me to do, He will help me and give me the ability to do it. I trust Him.

He is an amazing Father after all.

He has big plans for my life. And He has big plans for your life too.

Jesus says in Matthew 7:9-11 (NIV)  “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

What are the desires of your heart? I’m praying about mine today. And I know that if I ask, God will make His desires for me my desires for me too.

What did God put you here to do? Hit reply and let me know. And if you don’t know for sure, hit reply and we can pray for clarity together. Because I want EVERYTHING God has for you.
